I was confused, too when I read that there were no baby-friendly
hospitals in the US. I was sure this was not the case, as when I delivered
my daughter over 2 yrs ago, that hospital was working toward this status.
Then I remember a WIC meeting where we were given the WHO
baby-friendly policy and a corresponding list of US baby-friendly policies.
The changes seemed small, but were significant. For example, WHO policy
mandates that no ABM be given to babies; US policy states that ABM should
not be offered to babies who's moms have stated they are breastfeeding (Not
exact wording, this is from memory as I don't have the report in front of me).
Maybe this is what is causing some of the confusion. WHO certified
Baby Friendly Hospitals have a much stricter criteria than the watered down
US version. US hospitals may be certified, but under US code ????????
Anyone have more info. on this? I may be all wet--I'll look for
the report in the mean time.
