The risk of Reye syndrome is small when a child is given aspirin. It
increases somewhat when the child has influenza or chicken pox, and should be
avoided in those circumstances. Has there ever been a documented case of Reye
syndrome in an infant breastfed by a mother taking salicylates? I suspect
other side effects from salicylates are more the issue with a breastfed
infant: the possibility of decreasing platelet agreggation (bleeding),
increasing jaundice, and gastric irritation and bleeding that might cause
anemia.
