I've had two working moms call recently about lowered milk supply (per lowered
pumping volume) at 3 months. Some of my assessments:

1. At 3 months, moms try to do "everything" and all help is gone and assumes
things are under control. They forget the "eating when you are hungry and
drinking when you are thirsty" admonition.

2. Dads usually start going about their business - often not helping as much -
either with baby, house or other children.

3. Things at work are more demanding (how much flex-time does she EXPECT).

4. "You've got to get away and DO things." message gets to moms - even though
the last thing they want is to "get away", since they ARE away all week! So
they try to entertain or go to special functions - even though just doing the
day-to-day has them exhausted.

5. If a vacation is at this time, it often is a visit to family - and usually
this is stressful (the baby wants to nurse ALL THE TIME???).

6. Smoking and use of other drugs (for colds, contraception, etc) is done with
less thought to the effect on breastfeeding - especially if the baby has been
doing very well until now.

7. Sometimes one breastpump is less effective and moms need to change, even for
a short time, to another one.

8. Both moms were able to resume their usual production after a weekend of
"mothering yourself" - rest, eat well, drink, put baby to breast often. - and an
admonition that a breastfeeding working mom deserves to follow her own body's
cues rather than the article in "Woman's Day" or any other magazine encouraging
MORE action!
