     Claudia,

Rob Ferguson has passed on to me a copy of your e-mail message
requesting sources for the New York-based deep sea cod fishery. I have
found good information on American deep sea fishing off Atlantic
Canada in the following: "Documents and Proceedings of the Halifax
Commission, 1877, under the Treaty of Washington of May 8, 1871"
(Washington: Government Printing Office, 1878), 3 vols. This will be
of use only if New York fishers ventured into waters near Canada's
Atlantic coast. I also recollect that Ronald Tallman did a PhD thesis
for the University of Maine at Orono on US fishing in Atlantic Canada,
mainly from the point of view of fisheries diplomacy. It might be
     worth a look.

I am very interested in your subject, because I have done a lot of
work on the cod fishery in Atlantic Canada - is this for a thesis or
an article? I would like to see the finished product when it becomes
     available.

     Good luck,
     Jim Candow
