Dear Eliot Braun,
   it has been my experience that the term 'potting' was the
shortened form of the act of pothunting an archaeological site. I
think a better term for your situation would be 'manufacturing' or
'crafting' (the latter if the pottery wheel was unknown at the time
being considered). For specific methods of pottery manufacture I
would refer you to Anna O. Shepard's book Ceramics For The
