It is the same as when you go out and dig before you do exhaustive
research.  Many, and I mean many archaeologists, have gone out and dug
before they did adequate research and destroyed the resource.  This is
where the historical archaeologist makes grave mistakes and this is where
the problem is.  A team of a historian and an archaeologist should work
together.  The historian will do the required research and if, and only
if, the research reveals inadequacies in the "story" then the
archaeologist starts digging.
