I would like to agree with Larry's comments, and add a couple of points.
The projections of HA's growth in academic departments is described in the
AAA newsletter. They surveyed anthro dept. heads and asked about expected
growth areas- HA came out looking pretty good (especially compared to
linguistics- sorry for any linguisists out there!). The academic job market
overall is very bad- it might even be worse for other types of archaeology,
esp. people working in the Old World. I think one of the problems is that
depts. have been turning out HA Ph.D.'s faster than any realistic expansion
of the job market (IMHO) -DBL.
