Robyn Hollen, you described very graphically a nipple problem - this is an
invaginated nipple, by the sound of it. You may find that the dimple ring
Chele Marmet (Lactation Institute, Encino, Los Angeles) designed will help
keep this nipple from "telescoping" back in while it is still wet. The
dimple ring is a piece of velcro cut in a ring shape and is quickly put
around the base of the nipple immediately after feeding/pumping so that it
fits snugly (overlapping the ends) and holds the nipple everted till it is
dry, when it can be removed. Good luck! Otherwise, of course, you could just
ask Chele what else might work!
