Everyone,
Framing the risk/benefit ratio of BF/artificial feeding in terms of bf's
normalness is sufficient to get the zealot label regardless of the volume or
forum used. Whenever you disconfirm the status quo, labels are thrown
around. Helping mothers make an informed decision is one part of it - the
legal doctrine of informed consent means being provided with sufficient
information on the risks/benefits of the intervention proposed. Actually
sticking with the mom through thick and thin is another labeling activitiy.
The bottom line is that "zealot" labels are given to those who act and speak
as if breastfeeding matters. The "guilt" thing comes from grieving a loss of
expectations - finding out that BF really does matter, or finding out there
was a solution to what you thought were insurmountable problems.
So - continue to act and speak from a position that breastfeeding is normal,
therefore artificial feeding is the intervention for which informed consent
should be obtained. I've found that wearing BF t-shirts, bumper stickers,
buttons, etc. brings supporive comments out of the woodwork. Like Kathy A,
there is no doubt where I stand.

pursuasion!)
