Bateman, just in case someone else was interested.
 
We've been working with the GIS package arc/info here at the Illinois
State Museum since the early 80's.  Most of the effort has been to
develop and maintain the locations of sites in the files of the Illinois
Archaeological Survey, but I have utilized it for strictly historical
archaeological purposes on a number of occasions.  If you have access to
a WWW browser, point it to the url given in my signature below, and
follow the trail to "posters" and "papers".
 
I'll check to see if gopher will be able to find them also, but probably
not until monday.  (I only do my system administration stuff on mondays
until I defend the dissertation)
