In 1979-80 I was field supervisor on excavations undertaken by Michigan State
University on three river towns along the Tombigbee River in Clay County,
Mississippi. This was part of the Tombigbee Waterway project undertaken for
the Corps of Engineers through the National Park Service in anticipation of a
recreation area to be established in the area of these sites (which did not
happen). The sites are Colton (ca. 1830s), Barton (ca. 1850s-1870s) and
Vinton (ca. 1850s-1870s). The excavations resulted in many reports and at
least two or three dissertations at Michigan State. People to contact with
more information about this are Charles Cleland (Michigan State Univ.
Anthropology Dept.), Kim and Steve McBride (Univ. of Kentucky Anthropology
Dept.), and Dean Anderson (Michigan State SHPO, Lansing).
