Subject: Re: WANTED: underwater archaeologist

Colleagues:

[Thanks to Eric Harding for forwarding the attached message from ARCH-L]

One wonders why Ms. Cohen-Williams chose NOT to cross-post this "HELP
WANTED" message to NAUTARCH as well as to ARCH-L, particularly given that
her husband, Dr. Jack Williams of the Center for Spanish Colonial
Archaeology in Arizona (and a subscriber to this list), is/has been
employed by the Pacific Geographic Society (a for-profit California
corporation) in their efforts to "recover artifacts" of the 1605 fleet
which went down in the Serranilla Banks of the Colombian Caribbean. Why
did Dr. Williams (a VERY-dry-land Arizona archaeologist) himSELF not post
this message to NAUTARCH? Is there some reason to not seek a nautical
archaeologist in the nautical archaeology community?

What is going on in La Serranilla? Is this archaeology? Reports in the
Colombian press (CAMBIO16, 14-24 Nov.1994."En Busca del Tesoro" - In
Search of the Treasure) indicated that archaeological oversight of Dr.
Williams' operation is being carried out by an anthropology B.A. from the
University of the Andes (John McBride Giraldo) who appears to be a
first-year graduate student at INA/TAMU, purportedly in the employ of
Cartagena's Museo Naval. Perhaps Mr. Bob Adams - an INA/TAMU M.A. graduate -
who also recently worked for the Pacific Geographic Society on this
project, could fill us in on the nature and quality of the archaeological
methodology being employed in this artifact "recovery" effort. Lots of
interesting questions here.

Any of you interested in lending academic legitimacy to this effort can
respond to Ms. Cohen-Williams at the address indicated in her posting to
ARCH-L (below).

If you have any questions about the nature of this effort, you might
direct them to:

Dr. Arturo Infante Villareal <[log in to unmask]>

Dr. Infante is Rector of the University of the Andes, and sits on the
Colombian President's historic shipwreck advisory commission. I'm certain
that he'd be interested in your questions and comments.

Regards,

Richard Cassin
