Regarding privies, cisterns, and wells, one good review of nineteenth-century
cistern construction practices is "Brother Farmer, build you a cistern", by
Erich Scroeder, in Landscape, Architecture, and Artifacts: Historical
Archaeology of Nineteenth-Century Illinois, 1993 (E. Schroeder, ed.),
Illinois Cultural Resources Study No. 15, Illinois Historic Preservation
Agency. It includes a review of cistern construction methods from 19th
century agricultural journals, as well as a description of two cisterns from
archaeological sites in Illinois.
