This may not be appropriate to floatation, but some paleontologists I've
worked with have used an oil, called "Pleistocene A," to disaggregate clay
for the recovery of microfossils (mostly foraminifera), which they then
screen from the slurry.  I don't know if this could be applied in some way to
archaeological materials.
