"The Source" by James A. Michener, I am told, is about archaeology
and religion.  There is also a popular series of novels titled
"People of the Earth", People of the Wolf", and "People of the Fire"
(with more intended or already written) which is about early peopling
of North America and was written by Michael Gear and Kathleen O'Neal
Gear (apperently a couple of archaeologists).  I've read the first
two and they both started with archaeologists excavating the remains
of one of the characters in the book - the second was too much like
the first, so I haven't read further in the series.  I hope that
helps.
