I don't recall ever seeing anyone breastfeed a child until I was married,
and that was a hippy-style woman in her own home as we were having dinner.
My husband and I didn't know where to look. However as a young adult, I
had already had a dream where I breastfed a child - weird, I thought, but
it felt so good. I've since put this down to inherent biological memory
(though I was bottlefed).

When I was pregnant, my father in law (a doctor) gently mentioned that he
would like me to breastfeed his grandchild, and he lent me a copy of the
Womanly Art of Breastfeeding. How amazing that he had that book on his
shelf to give out to pregnant women! I bristled a little at his perceived
interference, but I found the book was amazing and made so much sense.
The rest is history... In fact, experiencing how much of infant feeding
is at times a coin-toss in modern society has made me a much more
passionate breastfeeding educator.

My love and thanks also go to Pamela Morrison who made it seem so possible
at an antenatal class, and who mentored me to become an IBCLC.
