Collections Assistant Position Opening at the Maryland Archaeological
Conservation Laboratory, Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum, St. Leonard,
Maryland



Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum is seeking an enthusiastic and
energetic candidate to fill the position of Collections Assistant with its
Maryland Archaeological Conservation Laboratory (“MAC Lab”).   The purpose
of the position is to perform a variety of artifact collections management
duties under the direction of the MAC Labs Curator of State Collections, as
well as archaeological fieldwork during the annual JPPM Public Archaeology
Program, under the direction of the MAC Labs Deputy Director.

Duties of the position will include a variety of collections management
related duties including preparing archaeological collections for a long
term storage; surveying and assessing the condition of collections and
their storage requirements; identifying artifacts in need of stabilization
and conservation; rehousing collections in archival materials; assisting
with processing incoming collections; assisting with the management of
artifacts on loan; and assisting with the creation of type collections and
artifacts displays.

This position also provides both field and lab work for the annual JPPM
Public Archaeology Program. The assistant helps provide professional
guidance to volunteers, showing them how to dig, look for artifacts, draw
site maps, etc.   The collections assistant also washes, labels, and
catalogs artifacts at the Maryland Archaeological Conservation Laboratory.
