I agree that cap lifters don't seem to occur in 1860-1870 catalogs (and there are a few, such as those from Sargent), but they are advertised somewhat later than 1920 (e.g., the last two below):

Illustrated Catalog of Undertakers’ Hardware, Chattanooga Coffin and Casket Co., Chattanooga, Tennessee (1905):
4 pages of cap lifters, pp. 154-157), 60 styles

C.M. McClung & Co., Hardware Supplies, Catalogue Number 20 (ca. 1905):
Pg. 1191-1193, 3 styles of cap lifters (none appeared in the 1891 catalog)

Casket Hardware and General Sundries of Undertakers’ Supplied, Embalming Burial Case Co., Burlington, Iowa (1912):
Multiple pages (32-50) of cap lifters

C.M. McClung & Co., Hardware Supplies, Catalogue Number 50 (ca. 1912):
pg 1054-1056, 5 styles of cap lifters

Simmons 1918 Complete Catalog, Simmons Hardware Co., Philadelphia, Pennsylvania:
Pg. 682, 1 style

Sargent Casket Hardware, Sargent & Company, New Haven, Connecticut (ca. 1920): 4 pages of cap lifters (36 styles)

Funeral Merchandise, F.H. Hill, Co., Chicago, Illinois (ca. 1925):
Pg. 122, 5 styles

Casket Hardware and Accessories, Electrolier Manufacturing Co., Montreal, Canada, Catalog No. 14, pg. 13 (ca. 1935):
6 different cap lifters, ranging from $2.50 to $9.50 per gross

Best,
Mike

Hi Kerry,

Caplifters appear in US burials around the 1870s and generally go out of use in the 1920s. I have not seen them from the 1850s.

Sorry this isn't much help!
Megan.
