> Remember, those that irradiate food products are usually doing so with 'clean' packed product - peas in a plastic bag, not combs in dirty boxes.
Here's what I had to do:
1) equalize the weight in the supers, only a few frames of honey in each box
2) find just the right cardboard carton, exactly the size of the supers, so it wouldn't cave in
3) bag the supers in heavy duty plastic bags and force them into the cartons, which now were a bit too tight
4) palletize the supers, and shrink wrap them.
5) ship them from NY to Massachusetts and back
we put packages in these boxes. the rest of the woodenware we disinfected with bleach.
we noticed no real benefit from all this time, labor, and expense.
like I said, most of the pathogens come with the bees
On another note:
The domestic silkworm Bombyx mori (B. mori), is an important lepidopteran insect of great scientific and important economic value. However, silkworm is susceptible to pathogens, especially to viruses, which bring great of economic loss to the sericulture industry. Currently there is no effective treatment developed for viral diseases of silkworm.
A variety of molecules and pathways have been identified to be involved in the immune responses in the silkworm to viruses, such as the antimicrobial peptides, prophenoloxidase-activating system, apoptosis, ROS, small RNA and related molecules.
We can genetically locate and obtain the target genes which control the resistance of silkworm to viruses by molecular genetics method, genetic linkage analysis. For example, the resistant gene of silkworm to BmDNV-2 (BmBDV) was identified using this method.
We believe that the silkworm and its viral pathogens will give a nice model to further study the innate immunity, and we hope that our analysis will contribute to better understand the molecular aspects of insect immunity against DNA viruses.
Discovery of anti-viral molecules and their vital functions in Bombyx mori.
