Charlie, it seems to me that you're missing the point.  It's not a question
of the presence of a small proportion of mutants.  Rather, it's about
prevalence.  Your risk of personally incurring a life-threatening infection
by an antibiotic-resistant strain of a common bacterium increases greatly
as the *prevalence* of that strain in your daily exposure increases due to
overuse of that antibiotic in livestock.
