There is an example of unintended consequences in an attempt to reduce the local mosquito population by encouraging insectiverous birds to nest in the area. They do indeed eat mosquitos, but they prefer dragonflies. They quickly reduce the dragonfly population to low levels. Unfortunately the dragonflies ate enormous amounts of mosquitos, so the mosquito population rose instead of falling...
