Help Wanted:
Archaeological Field Assistants needed for Project in Mississippi

Duties include standard archaeological tasks such as pedestrian survey,
note-taking, mapping, total station transit-work, stratigraphic documentation,
and excavation. Some days may involve artifact curation and directing volunteers.
All these activities will take place under the direction of the principle
investigator, Dr. Terrance Weik.

Project Overview: Archaeology at Levi Colbert’s Prairie, located in Monroe County,
Mississippi, is shedding light on cultural landscapes, slavery, and social practices in Chickasaw
territory during the “Indian Removal” period (1815-1838). The primary
goal of the 2018 field season is to test geophysical anomalies that are aiding
in the discovery of residences, workplaces, and configurations of an
agricultural settlement. Dr. Weik (University of South Carolina), has been
collaborating with Dr. Brad Lieb and the Chickasaw Nation, and volunteers since
2012.

Qualifications: The minimum qualification is (a) undergraduate coursework & a field
school, or (b) intensive volunteer time, or (c) CRM experience. A M.A. or PH.D.
degree or current enrollment in a graduate school program in anthropology
(specializing in archeology) is beneficial and could affect wages. Candidates
should possess good communication skills, and the ability to work independently
or in teams. Candidates should be able to do moderate lifting (up to 40lbs.)
and field walking (up to a mile a day).

Work Setting: The fieldwork will take place near Okolona, MS, about 15 miles west of Amory. The
field assistants can lodge at local housing provided by the project. The work
involves excavation in open farm land.

Work Dates: May 21st through June 15th 2018, Monday through Friday, 8.30am-5pm. Some
Saturdays might be involved for rain or makeup days.

Compensation: Wages will be commensurate with experience,
and include some fringe benefits.

Contact Information: Interested candidates should send a C.V. or
resume and a list of references to Dr. Terrance Weik at [log in to unmask]
who is in the Department of Anthropology, 440A Gambrell Hall University of South
Carolina, 817 Henderson St, Columbia, SC 29208. Dr. Weik’s phone#’s:
803-834-2807 [cell]; 803-777-6789 [office].
