Judging for food spoilage via appearance, color change, smell, and taste is
a time-honored technique, learned by most humans as children, and perfected
by food preparers.
Tasting usually is done only after the food in question has passed the
other assessments, and the food is generally spit out if it doesn't taste
right. It's generally not difficult to tell if there has been fungal or
bacterial growth.
