This one does appear to be made of bone. There is a second one in the collection that if I remember correctly is ceramic.

Alexander Anthony can speak for himself, but he did write that the
object was made of bone.

The object appears to be burned around the slit end so it might be a
ceramic
wick holder for a bottle-type oil or alcohol lamp. I found somewhat
similar
ceramic items in a Google Images search for ' antique ceramic bottle
lamp
 wick holder.'

Modern bottle-lamp wick holders typically have a round hole at the
top to
slide a round multistrand cotton wick through, but older kerosene
lamps used
flat multistrand cotton wicks for which the wick holders had a slit
top so
the wick would burn with a wider flame.

 Subject: Artifact ID Help

 Hi All,

I could use some help identifying an artifact. It was recovered from
a
Midwestern site dating from the late 18th to early 19th -century. It
is
currently assumed to have originated from a medical facility of some
sort,
maybe a laboratory. It is made of bone and the hole goes all the way
through. Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated!

 Cheers,

 Alex
