Interestingly enough there was a very good discussion on freakonomics (both books and on line discussions) about the effect of volunteer ("free") donations of organs and tissues on the said organs/tissues supply. And the conclusion was that the system of volunteer ("free") donations of the organs, blood and other tissues was actually one if the causes of the shortages...
