I would say minimum of 4 to 6 weeks. I believe the American Academy of
Pediatrics advise no pacifier for first month. Not sure what research, if
any, this is based on. I am going by experience.

I share with parents that I have seen many babies with faltering growth,
and/or mom's with lower supplies, who have turned things around pretty
quickly by discontinuing pacifier use, and responding to ALL cues. If the
family seems hesitant to discontinue the pacifier, I will state that it is
ok to use the pacifier if baby is getting a shot or blood test (but then
remind them that breastfeeding during such procedure is analgesic) or if
mom is riding in the back seat with baby and cannot practically stop to
feed or safely feed while both restrained.

Also give a couple tidbits about cleanliness, safety (no paci's tied to
clothing and beware of parts coming apart, recalls etc).

There is a thing about putting baby to sleep with paci as an intervention
against SIDS, again which the AAP recommends wait a month for bf babies,
and many parents have heard or read about this.
