Just what for? What research question is of such importance as to justify the expenditure of tax dollars? Not that I oppose research, even pure research, but how would you present this to the taxpayer? The Vanishing Bees? Honey bee colony numbers in the US have stabilized and no one has ever documented a shortage, except for almond pollination. Should the taxpayers subsidize the almond crop, most of which is exported?
