Beryl: I have read all the available accounts by survivors. The Essex was stove in by a single whale. Before it sank its crew had time to collect some gear and then set off for South America in the whaleboats. They did not try to make some closer islands due to a fear of native cannibals. They were not pursued by whales. They ended up having to eat some of their crew mates. Only a few survived, including the Capt. I have all the details in the timeline I made while at SAIR.
