Here's an informative and interesting discussion focused on our increasing understanding of the start of the "big melt" that will likely characterize the 21st century earth.  The physical dynamics of water and ice are becoming increasingly understood, and then there's a whole biological component that's been stored in the "unplugged" freezer that's thawing.  Sounds like a good science fiction story in the making. Grist for the public science engagement mill.
