Jeff,
And will your space be open during open museum hours?

Hi Kathy,

We have 1 FT staff now transitioning into our Maker Studio. He also doubles as the main organizer for our Maker Faire, so he definitely earns his keep. In the coming months, we will also be hiring 2 PT staff -- 1 shop manager, 1 program delivery educator.

Other staff will also do programming in our Maker Studio, on an 'as needed' basis.

And thanks to all of you who responded to who has Maker Spaces in their facilities.
As we move forward in planning our Maker Space I have another question regarding staffing and when your spaces are open to the pubic: I am looking at hiring 2 part time staff plus volunteers to cover our area so it will not be open all day every day. Just curious about the models going on out there.

Are your spaces open all day or only certain hours?

How do you handle large school groups coming through the space?

What did you look for in hiring staff for these areas in terms of experience? Educators first? Maker/Tinkerer first? A combination of both?

Would anyone be willing to share a job description or a part of the job description used to hire staff in these areas?

Thanks,
KAthy

Has anyone evaluated their maker spaces? We are exploring the possibility of creating one and would love to have some background evaluation to inform our thoughts. I'd also be interested in hearing any thoughts on what has worked wonderfully as you've implemented your maker spaces, and what you wish you'd done differently. Please contact me offline. Thanks!
