Hi, Alissa. Depending upon the size of your area, one of our favorite outdoor activities is stomp rockets. While there are lots of different iterations of the activity, the Exploratorium's write up of the activity is marvelous: http://www.exploratorium.edu/math_explorer/BBO_makingRockets.html
We've had guests shoot a rocket at least 100 feet, so having enough space is key.

Paper airplanes (using recycled paper, of course) has also been a popular activity to pair with stomp rockets.

Best,
Anne

hi all,

gearing up for summer here in Boston, and I'm thinking about new activities to do outside. In the past I've done things like alka-seltzer rockets, playing with centripetal force (swinging a cup of water around your head), things that are pretty quick, suitable for "drive by" programming and things you wouldn't do inside because they're too wet/messy/tall etc.

I grow a bit bored with my usual repertoire and am looking for your favorite activities for the great outdoors. Which, by the way, is paved. Not grassy.

thanks all!
AD
