Friends and colleagues: Descend into Roman minesin northern Spain in the November edition of Strata: Portraits of Humanity,available online and on TV.

 

In this episode we present “Metalla Oiassonis,”a film from Felix Ugarte Elkartea of Spain introducing us to the complex worldof the ancient mining that the Romans developed at the ancient port city ofOiasso, located within the modern city today named Irun in Spanish and Gipuzkoain Basque, in Spain near the French border.  In the western foothills ofthe Pyrenees and the next to the Bay of Biscay stands the granite massif calledAiako Harria in Basque and Peñas de Aya in Spanish.  On these slopes oneof the chief mining centers of the Iberian Peninsula lasted until modern times.
