Jean Clottes to be Keynote Speaker for 11th Edition of The Archaeology Channel International Film and Video Festival

Eugene, OR – Dr. Jean Clottes, highly acclaimed worldwide for his research and interpretations of prehistoric rock art around the world, has agreed to be Keynote Speaker for the 11th Edition of The Archaeology Channel International Film and Video Festival, to be held May 9-13, 2014.

Dr. Clottes has a very long list of credits. He is widely known for his research and management work at spectacular Chauvet Cave in France, the site of the oldest known European cave art. He is the editor of the International Newsletter on Rock Art (distributed to 108 countries) and has published over 450 scientific articles and written or edited 30 books. Among works authored in recent years is Cave Art (2008), published in London by Phaidon Press. He has given many public lectures on rock art in France and in other countries (Andorra, Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, China, Denmark, England, India, Italy, Germany, Kenya, Luxemburg, Morocco, Namibia, New Zealand, Niger, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the USA). The American Rock Art Research Association awarded him their Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013. He was a principal adviser for film-maker Werner Herzog in his 2010 production of the acclaimed 3D documentary about Chauvet Cave, Cave of Forgotten Dreams.

“We’re extremely fortunate to be able to present Dr. Clottes as our TAC Festival 2014 Keynote Speaker,” says Festival Director and ALI head Rick Pettigrew. “He was our first Keynote Speaker in the inaugural 2003 edition of the Festival. He impressed the audience enormously at that time. In the intervening years, he has continued a spectacular career and added many, many more publications and honors to his resume. His return to Eugene honors us dramatically and sends another message that TAC Festival is a leading event worldwide giving public audiences a window onto the subject of where we all came from. When we invited him, he agreed almost immediately, as he remembers Eugene and is eager to come back”

Dr. Clottes’ keynote address will take place on the first night of TAC Festival, Friday, May 9, 2014. The Festival will screen the top films on the human cultural past from around the world May 9-11 at The Shedd Institute in downtown Eugene and then will welcome presenters on cultural heritage film from many countries and states May 12-13 to The Archaeology Channel Conference on Cultural Heritage Film at the University of Oregon Baker Downtown Center.
