DITTO! I even tell them in the interview. I can teach you the science but if you don't have the excitement, customer service skills and a willingness to put yourself out there for the visitor this might not be a good fit.

I have to agree, it IS ultimately the person, and about the mix of staff talent. However, my hiring default has always been, I can teach 'em the science, I can't teach 'em personality!

Jamie,
I try to get a little of both and have been fairly lucky in doing so. At my current museum we have six plus part-time educators on staff. I try to build a team of educators each with different strengths so that we may learn from each other and grow. Some of us are stronger with the technical/science stuff, some are better performers, some are great with our younger audiences, some are more formal in their instruction, etc. As long as the staff is open to growth, expanding their skills and communicating (this is key) then we do well and the visitor experience is positive. So I can't say that I hire one skill set over the other. In the end in, it is the person that one hires.
Clear skies,
Jason

Hi all,
I'm hoping you can help settle a recent [friendly] debate with a colleague: When hiring your front-line education staff to teach programs (i.e. classes; for us that's a small army of part timers), how many of you hire for education/presentation/performance background vs science background (recognizing that both is ideal!).
Thanks in advance!
