Hi  Here is some information, may be  this what you heard about...

The BSCS Biology Textbook  (Biology, A Human Approach) has a lab exercise where students figure out that termites will follow the trail of particular type/brand ink from a pen. Teachers are given an address where they can obtain the termites for this lab.   

That's my recall.  I heard about this two years ago from another science teacher-- haven't worked with this myself.  

I imagine that the pen company was surprised to learn about the unintended side effects of their product.
