ISEN-ASTC-L is a service of the Association of Science-Technology Centers
Incorporated, a worldwide network of science museums and related institutions.

Hi Anne,

I was doing a little research on this very same question just a bit ago.
I don't have a definitive answer for you - someone might. But here's
what I did to get a reasonable number;

I went to the ASTC 'find a science center' page and typed in
'university,' then 'college,' 'school' and any other related terms.

Eliminate the ones that happen to be on 'School Street' or 'University
Ave. You come up with about 40 institutions this way. These are of
course, just the ones that are ASTC members.

You'll find that a large portion of these are planetariums or natural
history type museums. Most are quite small, more like discovery rooms.
But there are a few larger ones, like the Lawrence Hall of Science

You would think there would be more, but for various reasons, which I am
still pondering, that's about it. There is something in there which has
to do with too many layers of bureaucracy and not enough direct control
of what you do, though I don't know for sure. Some have tried it and
eventually broke away form their university affiliations. The Da Vinci
Science Center in PA is an example.

I worked at the Flandrau Science Center for about 9 years. It is part of
the University of Arizona here in Tucson. Though it was one of the
foremost planetariums in the US during it's early years. It has
struggled recently and has never really made the transition to 'science
center.'

Let me know what you find out.
