Drones don't store well in cages, even when in a hive. If you let
them free in the hive, there is no guarentee they will still be there,
even if well fed. Even if the hive doesn't kick them out, I'd guess
you would loose at least half of them.
Semen is much easier to store and keeps for several weeks without problems.
