Infants born by unmedicated births will do just that. Nurse 8+ times a day. But working in the hospital setting the majority of our babies are born with some sort of pain meds on board. Of course the method of borth, meds used and duration of use all play a part. Getting infants immediately skin to skin helps IMMENSELY. They are amazingly alert right after birth even with meds on board and the vast majority latch and have a good breastfeed. In our hospital if they are health, FT and latch right after birth I really don't worry about them too much. I also support the staff when they start to worry. Most of the time the baby will eat several times but probably not the 8-9 times+ you see in a non medicated birth. The good news most wake up the second day and make up for lost time.
