Job Posting: Ceramics and Glass Specialist

POSITION: The George Washington Foundation (GWF) seeks applicants for
the position of Ceramics and Glass specialist. Located in
Fredericksburg Virginia, the museum operates three historic sites
associated with the Washington family - Ferry Farm, Kenmore Plantation,
and Accokeek Iron Furnace. The primary archaeological research is
performed at Ferry Farm, the boyhood home of George Washington.
Large-scale, open-area excavation has been underway for the past nine
years, and will continue indefinitely. The University of South Florida
(USF) is a project partner offering an annual field school. In return,
Ferry Farm offers research opportunities for USF graduate students.

DUTIES: The duty of the Ceramics and Glass Specialist is to conduct
artifact-based research in the context of the ongoing excavation
program. This position involves designing and executing ceramics and
glass analysis of material recovered from the excavation of the George
Washington Boyhood home archaeological site, and situating that analysis
within the social context of its time.

The successful applicant will conduct in-depth analysis of colonial and
antebellum glass and ceramics. They would produce and present
scholarship on the role of these vessels in 18th century daily life.
They would also assist in the design, creation and installation of
exhibits about the Washington Family and their material world. The
results of this work will be disseminated through scholarship,
publications and presentations for the general public and professional
audiences. The collection is largely from the colonial period, but
contains components related to the Civil War. In addition, the Ceramics
specialist is responsible for the creation and maintenance of the
Department's Object Catalog.

As a staff member of a living history museum, the successful applicant
will also provide instruction on material life in Colonial Virginia to a
variety of student and lifetime learners. Duties will also include
providing a mentorship role to mostly undergraduate students.

MINIMUIM QUALIFICATIONS: MA in anthropology, archaeology, history, or
closely related field and three years of professional experience in
archaeology, including crossmending, vessel identification, artifact
analysis, or vessel cataloging. Previous experience with the analyses of
large collections of colonial ceramics and glass is highly desired.
Special consideration will be given to applicants demonstrating prior
experience in working with colonial material culture, original
documents, and historical archaeology of the Chesapeake region. A
working knowledge of Re:Discovery and Access is recommended.

This position requires a motivated, organized individual with an
understanding of advanced research techniques and demonstrated ability
to write clearly. Public Speaking is also a requirement of the position.
Additional Computer skills are considered a plus.

This is a permanent, full-time position. GWF offers competitive
salaries and a full benefit package.
