Greetings!

I've successfully used journals with high school students in a structured
summer zoo internship program. We gave them physical books in which they
recorded reflections on structured and unstructured experiences using
writing prompts to address career awareness, skill development or
acquisition and self discovery. We had three writing prompts under each
area. An example of a career awareness writing prompt was "A job that I
would be good at is...because..." Another was "I need to improve my team
building skills by..." Students were encouraged to communicate in whatever
way was most comfortable to them -- writing phrases, paragraphs, poems,
songs, drawing pictures or concepts maps. The important thing was that
their points were made clearly; they were asked to share 'why' as well as
'what'. We also gave them some examples of journal entries to stimulate
their thinking.

More to Preeti's questions, I've used journals in evaluating student
reactions to an 9,000 square foot exhibition. I provided students with a
small (4" x 6"), eight page, stapled booklet. Each page contained either a
writing prompt or an image from the exhibition with a question. Students
were expected to generate a response on each page. Students were asked to
complete each page at the designated point of the exhibition and completion
time for each page was about 1-2 minutes. The information addressed
behavioral, affective and cognitive learning outcomes defined for the
exhibition.

Hope this helps! Feel free to contact me for further discussion.

hi everyone,

I am in search for successful strategies (or even unsuccessful ones) where
you have tried to build in a journal type experience at the exhibits for
elementary school kids on a field trip. Different from a worksheet, have you
tried setting up opportunities to journal? What does the journal look like?
What is in it? How long does the experience take? Is it for specific areas
of the museum? Is it a complete failure? Any and all comments, philosophies,
but especially strategies are welcome. Thanks in advance.
