Hi Emily -- I'd be happy to write an article about how science centers, small and large, can take advantage of federal grants, while making sure to plan projects that are well-suited to the organization and compatible with its strategic plans and finances. The article could be "planning 101" in getting the organization and a proposed project ready for presentation in a major grant. So let me know!

I have had a wide range of experience as a science center and children's museum CEO, NSF Informal Science Program Officer, senior consultant to Lucent Technologies Foundation (when they were giving grants to science centers!), and as a consultant on project planning, grant development, and evaluation for a wide variety of organizations including science centers, associations (even ASTC a few years ago), media producers, and youth/community organizations. I have developed successful grant proposals to NSF, NIH, Dept of Energy, NEH, and other federal agencies.

So let me know if I can be of any assistance.

Best regards,

Bob Russell

Subject: Looking for contributors to Dimensions issue on econonic sustainability

In order to fulfill their missions and serve their communities, science centers
and museums need to become economically sustainable. An upcoming issue of ASTC's
magazine, Dimensions, will focus on how science centers and museums can achieve
this by diversifying their revenue sources (whether through grants, major gifts,
sponsorships, membership programs, or earned income); supporting and motivating
staff in challenging times; partnering or merging with other institutions; or
focusing on their core missions. We're looking for a diverse array of
contributors-representing museums of all sizes, consulting firms, etc., in a
wide variety of countries-who can share best practices and practical tips and
strategies. If you're interested in contributing, please contact me at
