Charles,
In about 1968, my parents were invited to a 
dinner party at Frank Oppenheimer's house on 
Lombard Street to discuss ideas for the 
Exploratorium. My father was the science reporter 
for the Examiner, and I was included, too, as the 
token child that night.

Up to then, my only connection to the Palace of 
Fine Arts was one of modest delinquence. Ignoring 
the "No Trespassing" signs, my friends and I 
would climb the chain link fence to play in the 
ruins; fond and vivid memories.
