actually, it only would have been easier if you lived in a very few places.  A century ago, my grandparents were more or less on they're way over from russia to the lower east side.  They probably could have found their way to the NY Public Library, and someone there might have helped them out, if they had money for the trolley. Though maybe the local priest would have helped them out if he understood yiddish or russian.
Its not like you could send an email to someone who attended Boston Latin.  

But, anyway, I hate cedant equus mortuus.
