Hi Jayatri!

How are you and the twins? Hope all is well.

This sounds like a wonderful program for the new science lab we opened June 4th! The lab's goal is to encourage visitors to explore science through self-guided science challenges and hands-on activities for K-12 audiences.

We've observed families exploring activities/challenges with their children for more than an hour in LITE Lab. (Learning, Innovation, Technology and Education Lab)

Today, one little guy 4 or 5 years old saw us exploring the effects of liquid nitrogen on flowers, ping pong balls, and tennis balls and asked, "What kind of party is this?" I loved it!!

Funded by the Department of Energy, LITE Lab's goal is to discuss the importance and application of sustainability practices in our everyday lives. We also created activities/challenges for Chemistry, Physics, Biology, STEM, etc. You'll be glad to know we placed Nanoscience activities in LITE Lab and added other components to the activities to create exciting Nanoscience challenges!

I'll review the application and submit ASAP. Thanks for letting us know!

Regina

"Hidden Power: Energy, Electricity, and Efficiency"

Call for Applications

The Franklin Institute, in partnership with the Penn State Center for Nanoscale Science and through funding by the National Science Foundation, is offering a free set of floor demonstrations to interested museums that will be selected to participate upon review of application (application form can be downloaded from http://www.mrsec.psu.edu/museum/fourth/).

What is the program?

The program includes 8 cart-based, interactive, visitor-tested demonstrations with a focus on applications of materials science relevant to energy, electricity, and efficiency. Descriptions of each demonstration can be found at http://www.mrsec.psu.edu/museum/fourth/. Topics include:

   * Sources of Power
   * Turbines
   * Batteries
   * Solar Power
   * Piezoelectricity
   * Thermoelectricity
   * Light Bulb Efficiency
   * Light Emitting Diodes

An educator from each selected museum will be invited to attend a one-day training session at The Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, PA in October 2011. All reasonable travel expenses will be reimbursed by the program. Participants will receive all supplies to perform the program for one year for approximately 7 hours per week. After one year, museums are responsible for supplying all consumable materials if they wish to continue the program.

How are museums selected to receive the program?

Once all applications are received, the members of the partnership will review the applications and choose approximately 15 museums to receive the program. Criteria for selection include interest, commitment, museum size (past programs have included approximately equal numbers of small, medium and large museums), and museum location.

What does your museum need to provide for the program?

A completed application (download from http://www.mrsec.psu.edu/museum/fourth/) must be returned by July 22, 2011. Your museum must agree to present the program for a minimum of 7 hours per week for one year after receiving the program. Participating museums must conduct quarterly surveys with pictures. These will be used to evaluate and improve the program. The program requires a location that has a table or cart with nearby electrical outlet.
