I'm surprised no one has mentioned how the Western, Eurocentric
reductionist view greatly influences the debate. I would argue this
is one of those structural deficits Stephen mentioned a while back. I
wonder if this schema doesn't also have (some) potential to explain
the unwillingness of extremists on both sides of the debate to engage
in civil discourse? - "My reduction is better than your reduction."
There are other implications as well. I thought Jennie's comments
were spot on - besides pressure on teachers, we have to ask how
effective an 11-year-old is going to be in being comfortable with the
tension of uncertainty that is the basis of inquiry....at least part
of the "equation" is consideration of student's cognitive
development....
