This is the first year we have offered WeDo Robotics as an outreach program
in schools. I have found that I can do a 1-hour program, but it just covers
the basics and I have kids build a simple spinner that they can program and
do "spinner art" with. However, I greatly prefer doing a 2-hour program so
there is time to do that project and then have them do the "dancing birds"
as well. They have time to experiment with changing the pulley systems,
programming changes in the speed and direction of the birds, adding sounds
(even recording their own sounds. This week I am doing both a morning and
afternoon 2-hour program each day for 4 days in one school and the kids and
teachers are loving it!

I would love to hear about any science center's experience with
PicoCrickets, Lego WeDo, or Mindstorms. I was leaning towards the
PicoCrickets to attract a broader audience into engineering design
activities and because it might work in a short period (1 hour) with school
groups. Is anyone using either of the other two platforms in a similar time
frame?
