In the interest of self-disclosure, back in the early 90's, we
conducted an informal experiment at Dallas Museum of Nature and
Science Museum (formerly Dallas Natural History and The Science
Place). Someone decided to nail a hot dog to the shop wall and that
was soon followed by a hamburger patty (cooked) from MacDonalds.
While dehydration was a problem, mold certainly wasn't......my
recollection is they remained for at least 3 years....these specimens
did not appear to putrefy, but then again no one tested them either.
Also, if I remember correctly, Tim Pula at the Exploreum in Mobile
put a raw chicken into an empty aquarium so visitors observe it as it
degraded.
I second incorporating a 'live' element in the exhibit.
