Paul (and Histarch),

I was told this news by Audrey Horning a couple of days after Christmas, and
almost announced it on Histarch myself, but felt you would be better placed
to write a tribute - which I (correctly) assumed you would want to do.
But I will add my voice to restate that Geoff's irreplaceable body of
knowledge on post-medieval material culture is an immeasurable loss to all of
us with an interest in the subject, whichever country we might be based in.

No doubt SPMA will be planning its own tribute to a former SPMA president
(and current vice-president). However, in my SHA Newsletter editor capacity,
I have taken the liberty (after a brief consultation with Audrey) of asking
that Geoff be added to the list of people for whom a minute's silence is held
at the SHA conference business meeting in Texas, and plan on asking an
appropriate colleague in the UK to write an obituary for the SHA Newsletter
once the British post-medieval archaeology community has recovered from the
initial shock of the news of Geoff's passing.
