I don't think of it as a mobile museum (and they wouldn't either!), but when I worked at the Indiana Historical Bureau, we had a program called REACH (Resources Educating in Arts, Culture and History. It was an outreach program funded by several arts and humanities councils, and we partnered with the Indiana State Museum and the Art Museum. The program was designed to provide both teacher and student programming around INdiana's arts, inventions, natural resources, etc. We covered about 10 content areas, and had a resident artist. The communities we served were all over the state, and they had to come up with matching funds. We had slides kits for each of the content areas which were sent out to schools prior to our visit (which, incidentally lasted three days), miniexhibits to match, and a series of activities for each. We would arrive at a school on a Monday afternoon, set up in the gym, and get settled. The next day we would engage every kid in the school (or if it was a small rural community, the entire district). That night we would hold a teacher workshop. The next day we would continue the hands-on activities, and that night hold a community showcase, with an open workshop to help communities find local educational resources in their communities (for example, one area we covered was Indiana's glassmaking history - in one particular town, we were able to identify the number of glass manufacturing businesses who might be interested in contributing in-kind or cash donations to the school). Next day, more program.

The activities consisted of focusing on three content areas chosen by the individual teacher (who hopefully did the pre-visit activities with the class), followed by the artist in residence focusing on one of the three. I had the good fortune to work with a dancer who specialized in kinaesthetics (sp?), and was able to create movement activities reflecting the chosen content area. For example, if a teacher was interested in Indiana inventions, the artist would have each child create a movement, then partner with another kid doing a different movement, etc. Pretty soon the entire chain of kids was moving, and we were able to talk about how connecting different movements/motions required some interface - led to nice conversations about car parts, gears, etc.!
