Ok, ok…yes, I admit it, I am an anthropologist, and yes, I am familiar with this practice and the reasoning behind it (which is not discussed here but which makes perfect sense in cultural context).  What I used to tell my grossed-out squirmy undergrads was, "is it any more weird than piercings???"

You should have seen what it was like when we discussed religion.
